What is cholesterol levels?

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in all cells of the body. Your body needs some cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help you digest foods. There are two types:

  • LDL cholesterol - the "bad" cholesterol that can build up in your arteries
  • HDL cholesterol - the "good" cholesterol that helps remove LDL cholesterol from your arteries

When you get your cholesterol checked, you get your total cholesterol number as well as numbers for LDL, HDL, and triglycerides (another form of fat in your blood):

  • Total cholesterol - aim for less than 200 mg/dL
  • LDL cholesterol - aim for less than 100 mg/dL
  • HDL cholesterol - aim for 60 mg/dL or higher
  • Triglycerides - aim for less than 150 mg/dL

What causes high cholesterol?

High cholesterol is usually caused by lifestyle factors like:

  • Eating a diet high in saturated and trans fats
  • Being overweight
  • Not exercising enough
  • Smoking
  • Drinking alcohol excessively

Other potential causes include family history, hormone changes, pregnancy, stress, and certain diseases and medications.

What are the risks of high cholesterol?

Over time, high LDL cholesterol can slowly build up in your arteries and form deposits called plaque. This can narrow your arteries and make them less flexible, which can increase your risk for:

  • Heart attack or stroke - Plaque can rupture and cause a blood clot that blocks blood flow
  • Peripheral artery disease - Reduced blood flow to your legs and feet

That's why getting your cholesterol checked and knowing your levels is so important! Work with your doctor to determine your personal goal levels and make lifestyle changes or take medication if needed to reduce high cholesterol. Small changes can make a big difference in lowering your risk of serious health issues down the road!
